Getting married at De Courceys Manor

Owning the Best Wedding Venue in South Wales

Gold Banner

So, what’s it really like to own the best wedding venue in South Wales?!

In one word…phenomenal!

No day at De Courceys Manor is ever the same; from dealing with potential wedding bookings, coordinating our fantastic service and kitchen team, liaising with florists, cake makers, venue dressers, the list is endless! There is never a dull moment! It’s exciting, fulfilling, hard work and completely takes over your life.

We bought De Courceys Manor as a family in 2009, and as the last owners had gone into liquidation, it was in a very sorry state of affairs. Having already worked in the hospitality industry for many years I thought that breathing life back into the business would be easy, I couldn’t have been more wrong!

We reopened the doors in January 2010, with no financial backing, no bookings and no Chef…so the only way forward was to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in! Adopting a ‘make do and mend’ attitude we worked late into the nights cleaning, painting and repairing. My Mum has an amazing eye for interior design and my Dad can mend
literally anything, so we worked as a team to try to get the Manor looking as attractive as possible.

Without the budget for any additional office support, I was working 7 days a week in the desperate bid to try and secure new business. My husband and I were living on site, and that was a disaster in itself! The old managers flat (now our gorgeous Wedding Apartment) was practically untenable, as most of the ceilings had fallen down due to the leaky roof!

I was starting to think that we had bought Fawlty Towers!!!

However, with the support of the staff that had worked at the Manor for many years and the addition of a very fresh-faced Abigail, and later Lewis, things started to improve. We had taken on a very talented Chef and our reputation for amazing food was spreading fast.

By 2013 we had won the coveted ‘Best Wedding Coordinators in Wales’ and had consistently won the 5* TripAdvisor certificate of excellence.

At that point the business was growing so quickly that we soon established that we needed guest accommodation. Having lived on site for 4 years and had 2 children during that time I felt ready to move…cue the creation of our Wedding Apartment!

By 2015 we had refurbished the whole building, including replacing the carpets, which felt like a huge achievement! We were regularly running at least 3 weddings a week, hosting corporate events and Sunday lunch, and were constantly busy. The next few years flew by, but it soon became apparent that we needed even more guest accommodation.

I had always wanted country cottages in the grounds, as I felt that it would really be in keeping with the Manor. However, until then the circumstances were never quite right. In early 2017 we finally agreed on architect drawings and gained the relevant planning permission to make the dream a reality! The cottages neared completion early December 2017, and as we were already very busy we seemed to be running around like headless chickens…I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a stressful time!!

The last 18 months have seen us continue to grow and develop, with new additions such as our Gin Bar and the beautiful new wallpaper in our reception and hallway. With other exciting developments in the pipeline we are always looking at ways to make De Courceys even better than it already is!

Sitting here, nearly 10 years later, I genuinely think that I could write a book about the incredible highs, and lows of owning such a fascinating business. When it comes to weddings you get to experience every possible human emotion, and it is always an honour to be part a of something that is so life changing. I am so proud of the team that have been with us since the beginning, and what we have achieved in a relatively short space of time!

The below photos were taken back in 2009 when we first got our hands on the venue.
